CHAPTER 23

Catalina

I walked to my Vampire Culture class with a calm confidence I had never felt before. I knew I should be worried about being attacked but I had saved myself, proven myself. Ever since my parents were attacked and I learned the truth about myself and supernaturals, I felt lost, like life was spiraling out of control. When that knife was moving towards me and I knew what to do, I finally felt in control and I knew who I was meant to be.

I may still have a lot to learn but I was ready to work for it, to prepare to take my place as Queen. The part of me that grew up a quiet human girl, she was gone; I had ceased to be her when I was Awakened. I am the only remaining member of the Vampire Royal Family. I am the Vampire Princess. I felt my power hum in approval, and in my mind I saw the box that held my power cords dissolve.

The familiar warm presence filled my mind, you no longer need that child. You have accepted who you were born to be and in doing so your powers have merged with your soul. But you are even more special than you know. You’re now embracing your future, embrace your full potential and your mate- the truth will follow. I felt the warmth recede but the strength she brought me stayed. I walked into class with my head held high.

“Ah, Miss Walker. Running late today, are we?” Professor Hatmanu asked sternly but not unkindly.

“Yes, I apologize. I was speaking with Headmaster Harris,” I told her handing her the note he’d given me and ignoring the curious glances from my classmates. She simply nodded and I went to my seat next to Marina.

“Everything ok?” she mouthed. I nodded focusing back on the professor as she stood in front of her desk.

“As I was saying, as vampires, our natures are always present but most of the time we have the ability to control whether we act on those natures, those urges. As we discussed last week it is normal for our natures to push us harder when we are challenged or disrespected by someone we feel is of a lower station. There is one other factor that causes our natures to be harder, even impossible in some cases, to control. Does anyone know what that might be?” A pretty blonde in the front seat raised her hand and stood quickly when the professor acknowledged her.

“Life mates,” she said with a dreamy sigh.

“Correct. When a vampire meets their life mate our nature pushes us harder.” I felt Marina glance at me. “We become protective and possessive of our mate because they contain a piece of our soul and are meant for us and us alone. Without them we would eventually lose ourselves to our nature and become ruled by blood lust alone. Because life mates are sacred, a vampire defending their mate is generally protected by our laws.
